Hitome teaches Japanese kana and kanji on your iPhone. It needs no account, and we run no server for your data. This page lists what stays on your iPhone and what leaves it.
What stays on your iPhone
Your plan (start level, goal and pace), the kanji you have learned, your answers, your review schedule and your settings are kept on your phone. The Lock Screen and Home Screen widgets read them from a folder that only Hitome and its widgets can open. We cannot see any of this. It can be part of your own iPhone or iCloud backup, under your Apple account.
Lock Screen and notifications
Questions on the Lock Screen and in notifications are prepared and scheduled on your phone. When you answer from a widget or a notification, the answer is written on your phone. Nothing passes through a server of ours.
Pronunciation
When you tap the speaker, the reading is spoken by Apple's voices on your iPhone. No audio is recorded or sent.
Purchases
Payments are handled by Apple. To unlock Pro on your devices the app uses RevenueCat, Inc., which receives your purchase information and a random app user ID. It does not receive your name, email or progress. See revenuecat.com/privacy.
Analytics
To see which parts of the app work and where people get stuck, the app sends anonymous usage events to Google Analytics for Firebase (Google LLC). For example: a setup step was viewed or finished, the level, goal and pace you picked, your answer to the notification permission, the placement test was started, skipped or finished with the level it found, a review or writing practice was finished, a locked kanji or level was tapped, the widget guide was opened or closed, a paywall was shown, a purchase or trial with its product and price, and whether you are on the free plan, a trial or Pro. App version, device model and country are included. The kanji you know, your answers and your notification times are never sent, and no advertising identifier is used. What we don't do
No ads, no tracking across apps or websites, no selling of data. This website uses no cookies and loads nothing from other sites.
Keeping and deleting
Deleting the app deletes everything it kept on your phone. Analytics data is kept for up to 14 months. If you write to support we keep the conversation for up to two years and delete it sooner on request.
Children
The app is not directed at children under 13 and does not knowingly collect data from them.
